Cover: Icebreaker Almirante Irizar
The icebreaker ARA Almirante Irizar (Q-5) (RHAI) belonging to the Argentine Navy, was built in 1977 in the Wärtsilä shipyard in Helsinki, Finland. On December 15, 1978, was handed over to Argentina and was the national flag. His godmother was Mrs Celia Maria Villanueva de Fraga. Since then participated every year in the supply of the Argentine Antarctic bases, and other countries and is the flagship of the Naval Forces Antarctica. It is the only place with ice in the Southern Hemisphere, other ships in the hemisphere have polar transport category. On Tuesday, April 10, 2007, around 19:00 hours a fire in the generator room at the time the ship was 140 nautical miles (260 km) from Puerto Madryn with 241 crew on board. The fire destroyed the first power system (which accounted for the main extinction device), also burned the hangar where they were two Sea King helicopters. As far as out of the fire, forcing the ship's commander, Captain of Frigate Guillermo Tarapow, to order a total evacuation of the ship during the early hours of April 11. The operation was successfully completed at 6:45 when they were rescued the last hours of the 32 castaways liferafts used, only four reports of minor injuries and no fatalities.
